  1. Extrusion: Extrusion grades generally have melt indices below 1 and medium to broad MWDs. Suitable melt strength for low melt temperature is achievable during processing. Broader MWD grades are preferred for extrusion because they offer higher throughput, lower die pressure, and reduced melt fracture tendencies. PE has numerous extrusion applications, such as wire and cable jacketing, tubing, pipe, and profiles. Pipe applications range from small diameter yellow gas pipes to large diameter (48-inch) black, thick-walled pipes for industrial and municipal water lines. The use of large diameter hollow pipes as replacements for concrete storm sewers and other drainage systems is rapidly increasing.
Sheet and Thermoforming: Many large-scale picnic coolers utilize PE for their thermoformed liners due to its toughness, light weight, and durability. Other sheet and thermoforming applications include bumpers, storage tank liners, reservoir dividers, shipping containers, and tanks. Due to the toughness, acid resistance, and impermeability of MDPE, many rapidly growing plastic sheets are used for agricultural films or fish ponds.
  2. Blow Molding: Over one-third of HDPE sold in the U.S. market is used for blow-molded applications. These range from bottles for bleach, motor oil, detergents, milk, and water to large-scale production of refrigerators, automotive fuel tanks, and jerry cans. The blow molding grade's characteristic properties, such as melt strength, ES-CR, and toughness, are similar to those of the grades used for sheet and thermoforming processes, so similar resource grades can be used.
