PP, PE, PET, and PVC plastics are materials we frequently encounter in our daily lives. Each has its own characteristics, but they are all derived from petroleum and other fossil fuels. With growing environmental awareness, we need to understand the characteristics of these materials to make better environmentally conscious choices.
  - PP (Polypropylene): Sensory Identification: Feels hard, elastic, white and transparent, with high transparency; often has tape and printed characters. Characteristics: Good heat resistance (up to 120℃), acid and alkali resistant; can be used for soy sauce, vinegar, etc.
  - PE (Polyethylene): Sensory Identification: Feels soft, white and transparent, but with generally lower transparency; often has tape and printed characters. Characteristics: Poor heat resistance (only up to about 80℃), acid and alkali resistant; can be used for shampoo, shower gel, etc.
  - PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Sensory Identification: Feels hard, inelastic, transparent or semi-transparent; commonly used for soda bottles. Characteristics: Relatively poor heat resistance (only up to about 70℃), easily deformed, releases substances harmful to the human body, and should not be reused.
  - PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Sensory Identification: Feels hard, inelastic, opaque or semi-transparent; commonly used for plastic water pipes, flooring, etc. Characteristics: Poor heat resistance (only up to about 60℃), easily deformed, releases substances harmful to the human body, and should not come into contact with food.
How to Choose PP, PE, and PET Plastic Cups
  - PP (Polypropylene): Containers made from this material are the most common and safest type of plastic cup. PP material has good heat resistance (up to 120℃), is acid and alkali resistant, and does not easily release harmful substances. PP plastic cups usually have a number 5 marking, are transparent or semi-transparent, elastic, and often have tape and printed characters. When selecting PP plastic cups, pay attention to choosing products that are colorless, odorless, smooth, scratch-free, and free of deformation.
  - PE (Polyethylene): Containers made from this material are common disposable plastic cups. PE material has poor heat resistance (only up to about 80℃), is acid and alkali resistant, and does not easily release harmful substances. PE plastic cups usually have a number 2 or 4 marking, are transparent or semi-transparent, soft, and often have tape and printed characters. When selecting PE plastic cups, pay attention to choosing products that are colorless, odorless, smooth, scratch-free, and free of deformation.
  - PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Containers made from this material are commonly used for soda bottles. PET material has relatively poor heat resistance (only up to about 70℃), is easily deformed, releases substances harmful to the human body, and should not be reused. PET plastic cups usually have a number 1 marking, are transparent or semi-transparent, hard, and inelastic. When selecting PET plastic cups, pay attention to choosing products that are colorless, odorless, smooth, scratch-free, and free of deformation.
Some environmentally friendly plastic products are recyclable and biodegradable, such as:
  - PLA (Polylactic Acid): A polymer obtained by polymerization using lactic acid as the main raw material, it is one of the most common biodegradable plastics. PLA production is pollution-free, and the product is biodegradable. Used PLA can be composted and degraded into carbon dioxide and water at temperatures above 55℃ or under the action of oxygen and microorganisms, achieving material circulation in nature without affecting the environment. PLA can be used to make tableware, packaging bags, toys, etc.
  - PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate): A class of polymers produced by microbial fermentation, it has good biocompatibility and biodegradability. PHA can be completely degraded in various environments such as soil, freshwater, and seawater, without causing white pollution. PHA can be used to make agricultural films, medical materials, cosmetics, etc.
  - PBS (Polybutylene Succinate): A polymer synthesized from petrochemical raw materials, it has good thermal stability and processing properties. PBS can be completely degraded in soil and seawater without negatively impacting the environment. PBS can be used to make packaging materials, textiles, agricultural products, etc.
